Rev. A. Robert McGilvray,
Rev. A. Robert McGilvray, O.S.F.S., 76, a priest with the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, died Saturday, June 12, 2010, at his religious communitys home in Childs, MD. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Father McGilvray was raised in Wilmington, DE, and graduated from Salesianum School. He joined the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales seminary in 1953. After earning his undergraduate degree in Latin from Niagara University in 1959, he then completed his theological studies at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, where he earned a licentiate degree in sacred theology. He later graduated from Villanova University with a masters degree in foreign languages and doctorate in education from the Catholic University of America. He was ordained a priest in 1962 at the Church of St. Michel in Fribourg by Bishop Francois Charriere of Lausanne. He spent many years as a high school teacher, principal and professor of education at DeSales University, Center Valley, PA, where he worked for more than 25 years. Father McGilvray was a devoted teacher, committed to sharing with his students the latest innovations for integrating technology into the classroom, Rev. James Greenfield, O.S.F.S., provincial of the Oblates, said. Whats more, he worked tirelessly to advance the study of St. Francis de Sales. Here, he was an exemplary Oblate and true priest in the spirit of our patron. As a former student of his, I remember him in the classroom as a man of true gentleness. Survivors: The son of the late Andrew and Agnes Barrett McGilvray, he is survived by his sister, Jean Haney, New Castle, DE; and several nieces and nephews. Services: Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, June 16, at Our Lady of Light Chapel, 1120 Blue Ball Rd., Childs, MD. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. in the chapel. Interment will follow in Oblate Cemetery, Childs.
